Abstract (EN)

Hedonic hunger refers to the pleasure received by the increase in appetite, which is affected by the sensory properties of foods, although the body does not need it. This study was established to determine the relationship between hedonic hunger status, sleep quality and also body mass index (BMI) at levels of adults. The study was conducted with 207 volunteer participants, who adults aged 18 and older, non-pregnant and non-breastfeeding who 155 female and 52 male, who applicated to the Nutrition and Dietetics Department of Okan University Hospital between May 9 - July 31 2022. A questionnaire form was created to determine the demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements and eating habits of the participants. Food Craving Questionnaire (FCQ), Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ) have used for hedonic hunger and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Scale Index (PSQI) was used to measure sleep quality. The mean body mass index (BMI) for women was 28.96±5.94 kg/m² and 30.78±4.21 kg/m² for men. Of the individuals, 21.7% are normal weight, 31.9% are slightly obese, 30% are 1st degree obese., and 16.4% are 2nd degree obese. According to the statistical analysis of the data, the average sleep duration of the individuals was determined as 7.01±1.26 hours/day. It was determined that 54.8% of women had good sleep quality and 45.2% bad sleep quality, 30.8% of men had good sleep quality and 69.2% bad sleep quality. A significant correlation was founded between FCQ scores and BMI values of individuals (p<0.001). Individuals with normal weight were obtained to be statistically higher than those with 2nd degree obese and 1st degree obese individuals in the total score of FCQ. A significant correlation was founded between the total PSQI scores and the BMI values of the individuals (p<0.001). The PSQI total scores were obtained to be statistically higher in individuals with 2nd degree obese contrasted to individuals with normal weight. It was established that there was no statistically significant difference between the BMI groups of the individuals in the EMAQ sub-factor scores. When the correlations between the scales were examined, as the BMI values of the individuals increased, there was a 50% decrease in the FCQ total score, 14.5% increase in the EMAQ negative sub-factor score and 40.7% increase in the PSQI total score. As a result of the study, it is important to know that hedonic hunger and sleep quality affect BMI in nutrition planning. Keywords : Body Mass Index, Hedonic Hunger, Nutrition, Sleep Quality
