Abstract (EN)

This research was conducted to investigate the relationship between BMI and insulin resistance, blood lipids and glucose tolerance of individuals living in Middle Eastern Gulf countries. The population of the study was performed between December 2017- May 2018 with 40 adult participants who were volunteered to participate in the study between 30- 55 years of age who applied to Doku Medical Center, Nutrition and Dietary Polyclinic. A cross-sectional study. The data of the study were collected by using the questionnaire form prepared by the researcher (Annex-4) and laboratory information form (Annex-3). The results were evaluated with non-parametric methods at the level of confidence level of 95%. The results of the study were compared with Kruskal-Wallis Test according to BKI groups. Only the mean HDL of the BKI ≥30 group showed a statistically significant difference from the mean of the other two CBI groups. A significant correlation was found between BMI and HOMA IR (0.376), fasting insulin level (0.341), fasting glucose level (0.349), LDL cholesterol (0.330), HDL cholesterol (0.629). Fasting insulin levels (0.910), fasting glucose levels (0.660) and LDL cholesterol (0.386) were significantly correlated with HOMA IR. Finally, fasting glucose level with fasting insulin level (0.327); There was a significant correlation between fasting glucose level and LDL cholesterol (0.368) and LDL cholesterol and triglyceride. In conclusion, this study showed a significant increase in Homa IR, fasting glucose level, fasting insulin level, HDL and LDL cholesterol levels with the increase of BMI. Therefore, the importance of nutrition should be explained in order to control insulin resistance, blood lipids and glucose tolerance in individuals who are not in the healthy BMI range and make the recommended practices a lifestyle.
