Architect and brand collaboration: Stuart Weitzman stores designed by Zaha Hadid
In the past and present, luxury fashion brands cooperate with well-known architects as successful as they are in their fields and offer the designs of these stores that they are planning to be built. Such collaborations contribute to the value of the brand as well as a store belonging to the brand in terms of spatial quality; can also become the reason for the brand's products to be preferred by the potential customers of the brand. There are some features that luxury fashion brands seek for, in the architect they will work together for the design of their stores. In addition to the recognition of the architect, it is expected by the employer that the design language establishes a relationship with the brand which will provide a meaningful language integrity between the products belonging to the brand and the place where these products are exhibited. The main criteria for the architect to be a "brand" is the design quality of the spaces that they designed and the quantity of the designs that they achieved can also be an indication of their preference. A similar assessment is also valid for the architect. Zaha Hadid had designed a unique style of structures in terms of their position, function and characteristics (material, form, color, etc.) and at the same time is an indicator of their selectivity and doing business with a well-known luxury fashion brand will be a good reference for her as well that is an inevitable fact in today's consumption world. In this study, the contribution of such cooperation between architect and brand, to the design quality of the space is examined from the completed examples. The method of the study is to examine the transition to product exhibitions as a result of the changing consumption culture and the reflection of this change on consumption spaces. Then, to clarify the quality of spaces created by the touch of an architect in order to contribute to the brand power with the design of these exhibition spaces. Thus, by the works that the architect has done in the past using their distinctive design language, their style become recognized and this identity provides them to become a brand. By accommodation with the main suggestion that the spaces which can be qualified each as an artwork emerging from Zaha Hadid and Stuart Weitzman collaboration, also achieving its purpose of the brand's stores to be recognized visually as well and provides "experiential shopping" which is a new expansion as a conclusion of the thesis, is reached.
A scenario on conversion of industrial heritage into museum: Adana National Textile Factory
The industrial areas that are no longer functional due to a variety of reasons become the current problems of the contemporary cities. Those non-functional sites are commonly re-introduced to the cities through transformation scenarios that could respond to contemporary living conditions and current needs of the society. One of the best conservation methods to apply for those industrial sites is the transformation of them into museums. In that sense, the Adana National Textile Factory has been turned into a modern museum complex which let the visitors have a new experience and improve a new way of seeing towards historic industrial sites. The factory settlement has witnessed a long period from the late Ottoman period to modern Turkey which is still standing today. In 2006 the factory was registered and taken under preservation. It has been decided to establish a huge museum complex by 2013. The Adana Museum Complex is composed of five parts; Archaeology Museum that is opened in the depots of the Milli Mensucat Factory (2017), Agriculture, Industry, City Ethnography and Milli Mensucat Museum (to be completed in 2020) that will be opened in the factory area and social areas of the factory. For decades after its foundation, this significant urban space became an industrial landmark and a source of urban memory for a part of city dwellers. In this thesis, conversion of Adana National Textile Factory which has been regarded as the industrial landmark of the city into Adana Museum Complex is examined in the framework of collective memory and sense of place. Transformation of such industrial site into a museum complex is analyzed under the major headings of such as how the potential value of a historic industrial site is carried out today as a museum complex with its restoration project, displaying strategies and the choice of collections, how the final project speaks to the inhabitants' collective memory and to what extent the conservation of museum complex incorporates the many aspects of its place when evaluated through the concept of sense of place.
Investigation of urban climate and built environment relations by using machine learning
Climate change can cause a cascade of effects from the individual organisms to ecosystem-scale where in nature all species are elements of complex networks of interactions so every effect on every scale has great role. The properties of those networks are decisive on ecosystems all around the world so how they will be modified by climate change needs serious studies. Urban areas' vast population exert significant effects on the climate change even though they cover a small proportion of the Earth's surface, however, impacts of the urbanization on climate and ecosystems remain inadequately understood. In the meantime, urbanization continues to increase and in the 2030, 2/3 of the population is expected to be living in urban areas and this rate will increase in time. It is of importance to elaborate the studies investigating the relations between the urbanization and climate. In this respect, the use of information technologies with an extensive computational capacity is one of the cornerstones of the climate and urban studies. Machine learning algorithms is a branch of computer science that deals with automated recognition of patterns from data. The use of the machine learning algorithms can bring great advantages to both understanding and predicting the climate. The computational power with big data and ability to capture nonlinear behavior, learn as new data arrive, etc. make the machine learning favorable tool for understanding climate and developing urban planning. In this sense, purpose of this study is showing the advantages of machine learning algorithms by achieving working recurrent neural network algorithm to make climate predictions, and through this achievement, stating possible effects of machine learning on design and its contribution to understanding the climate.
Ankara Şeker Fabrikasının mevcut durumu üzerine kuruluşstratejilerinin yeniden kurulması
Sugar factories have brought significant achievements to the regions where they were established. These achievements, which we can define as establishment strategies, have versatile features such as providing industrial, rural, and agricultural development and supporting the modernization efforts of the society. In this thesis, the technical and social gains of sugar factories have been associated with Georg Simmel's concept of "the Stranger". Defined as one of the types of the social sphere, this concept removes the boundary between the private and public sphere and contributes to the continuous progress of society. However, sugar factories have lost these gains over time since the year they were established. One of the main reasons for this depreciation is the growth of cities as a result of rapid population growth and the fact that industrial areas remain in the center of the city. Ankara Sugar Factory, established in 1962, can be cited as an example of this situation. The factory established in the western corridor of the city has been torn between the dense urban fabric in time and has been subjected to the pressure of rent. It also faces the threat of privatization, like so many sugar factories in Turkey. These issues, which threaten the sustainability of Ankara Sugar Factory as an industrial area, have been examined within the framework of Timothy Morton's concept of "Dark Ecology". This concept argues that human beings must coexist in the future together with the degradation they have created and that this decay cannot be ignored. In this context, this thesis study has tried to establish the strategies of reconstructing the establishment strategies of sugar factories with current and contemporary architectural approaches. The proposed strategies were designed on the Ankara Sugar Factory campus area, as this industrial area has not yet been privatized. This study, which develops discourses about the future of the campus area, adopts the transformation strategies of IBA Emscher Park as a method. Located in the Ruhr region of Germany, IBA Emscher Park is not only an application area where industrial areas are re-functionalized but also a versatile transformation project where social and cultural renewal is fictionalized and continues to be constructed today. The project in question has a method based on industrial renewal and social and cultural renewal develops after transformational interventions. As a result, strategies for the Ankara Sugar Factory, an industrial area remaining in the city center, to participate in urban life and space without losing its industrial and cultural values have been developed. This study sets out with the idea of re-functioning an industrial field aims at social and cultural renewal in the long term and to establish a closer relationship with the city. With this thesis, it is aimed to present an academic study that discusses possible interventions to the campus area. Besides, the foundation has been prepared about the possible future use or situations of other sugar factories which are important elements of Turkey's industrial heritage.
The effects of utopic transformation of the shopping centers on fundamental components of architectural programs
This study compares the architectural programs in shopping centers, which are an indispensable element of urban culture, with the programs in the form of a single structure as part of the architectural culture in cities. In this comparison, plan, form, image, and material are accepted as the fundamental components of an architectural program and the findings are presented within the framework of these four components. As part of this study, four main programs, cinema, house of worship, children's playground, and street, were selected to be compared through urban and shopping center examples in order to discuss shopping centers and typology in our country on the upper scale. About 213 of the more than 400 shopping centers in Turkey are located in three metropolitan cities such as Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, thus the shopping centers selected within the scope of the study are limited to these three cities. In the study, when the relevant analysis is given, an idea is presented, especially through the concepts of non-place and simulacra, and as a result, it is found that the shopping centers are simulacra due to the transformation of the programs selected as examples over time. This transformation and analysis showed that cinema, place of worship, children's playground, and street programs also damaged people's experience in these places after they were included in the shopping center. In this case, shopping centers, which are constantly increasing and expanding in a holistic structure, destroy the architecture, the typological content of a building and the spirit of places. Therefore, architectural programs in shopping centers, which have undergone a utopian transformation, need a new definition.
This study attempts to examine and trace urban development, built environment, and material culture in İskenderun (Alexandretta) from 1920s to 1950s as the exceptional city of Turkey that experienced the change of ruling powers (Ottoman Empire, French Mandate, State of Hatay, Turkish Republic) in a few decades by focusing on the most vital part of the city, the coastline. Firstly, the terms of cultural diversity and collective memory are examined in order to constitute theoretical background of this thesis. These terms shed light to analysis since geopolitical and strategic location, cultural mosaic, and diversity of political administration and domination of different states in İskenderun set new orders/regulations/traditions that reflected to urban and architectural developments in the city in a few decades. Secondly, urban development, built environment, and material culture of İskenderun are scrutinized in order to understand how the urban planning (boulevards, streets, parks, quarters), public buildings (government buildings, schools, churches, mosques, synagogues, consulates), social and cultural institutions (restaurants, cafes), commerical buildings (banks) were formed, re-formed, used, adapted, and transformed in between 1920s-1950s. This thesis also attempts to understand to what extent the communities (Turks, French, Arabs, Armenians and so on) perceived and experienced urban space and built environment, in other words, how the city and buildings were formed, re-formed, adapted, transformed and legitimized in urban memory. Lastly, the coastline, most vital part of the city, is analyzed in detail by examining how this cosmopolitan region and cultural continuity was developed from 1920s to 1950s. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to assess urban development, built environment, and material culture of İskenderun in a network of relationships in line with ideological, political and cultural dynamics from 1920s to 1950s. Urban and architectural formation should be evaluated with reference to the multicultural context of İskenderun that was formed somewhere in between dualities; practical/ideological, eastern/western, traditional/modern, but in some ways as an original model that was hybridized in result of cultural encounter.
Towards a dialogic perspective for urban voids: An assesment of the diploma studio
Urban voids are the cornerstone for urban development and the grounds for change; therefore, their design process should be considered thoroughly. They may create spaces that have a dynamic relationship with the existing urban fabric. This study addresses the potentials of urban voids in the city and approaches to the urban voids and new perspectives and strategies over the relocation of military areas. The emerging voids from this relocation can be an opportunity to use the potentials of voids from different perspectives. A dialogical perspective with the changing contexts can be a tool for today's conditions or can give the ability to manage these voids. The scope of this paper is to scrutinize the potential of urban voids with the conceptual framework of Mikhail Bakhtin's theories of 'dialogy', 'carnival', and 'heteroglossia'. The Bakhtinian point of view aims to reveal a heteroglot and a dialogical perspective dominated by the carnavalesk state of urban voids. In line with this purpose, this paper aims to a Bakhtinian perspective to urban voids. The importance of repairing the urban landscape to be examined within the thesis's scope is based on dialogical thinking. Sennet's strategies and approach to the Bakhtinian perspective are essential to restore the urban landscape for Ankara. For this thesis, the diploma studio outputs are suggested to take the discussion further and examined through the specific strategies. The students experimented with ways of approaching the transformation of military areas in Ankara. It is proposed that the diploma studios' productions significantly contribute to repairing the urban landscape; because of the diploma studio's dialogic nature. Application of parametric building information modelling techniques on the historic masonry structures
Documenting the geometric and non-geometric data of historic buildings is imperative to preserve the historical heritage. Acquired data is articulated in 3D by means of various software and digital platform. In this respect, building information modeling platforms are advancing, becoming more accessible and convenient. It is predicted that this system can also benefit historical buildings, and some studies are carried out by a specialist in this regard. This system, which emerged as the concept of HBIM, is useful for conserving or re-functioning historical structures. However, non-standard building elements and complex geometries of historical buildings are the elements that make building modeling difficult. In this study, modeling methods that enable developing the HBIM model of non-uniformly deteriorated historic building elements are investigated. This study aims to examine the potential possibilities of available methods provided in Revit to reconstruct the non-uniformly deteriorated masonry wall of the historical building with smart objects within the scope of HBIM. At this stage, a historical structure with non-uniformly wall is studied as a case study to create an HBIM model. Within the scope of this thesis, the HBIM model of the historical masonry stone walls of the Anavarza/Anazarbus Triumphal Arch, which is a Roman-era structure and located in Adana, is produced with smart objects in Revit Software. The restitution project of the historical building is used as an underlay within the scope of this project, but this drawing also includes damaged structural elements. This thesis focuses on modeling the non-uniform elements with regular geometries, rather than modeling the geometries of the deteriorated elements of the historical building. In other words, it focuses on digitizing historical building elements with proper geometries. Restitution project modeling is preferred within the scope of this thesis in a short time in order to use time and resources accurately. It is aimed to obtain the necessary data from the Revit software throughout the project duration by processing the geometric and non-geometric data of the historical structure, for which the HBIM model is created. In addition, the positive and negative aspects of the method developed in the model of the Anavarza/Anazarbus Triumphal Arch, which was rebuilt entirely in a virtual environment, are revealed. In this process, it is aimed to create a road map by determining main and intermediate goals.
Mimari tasarım stüdyosunda anlatı eylemi: Stüdyo altı | üstü
This thesis investigates the creative potential of narrative acts as a design tool and an object through architectural design studios and opens it to reconsideration and discussion in the context of Studio Altı | Üstü, Department of Architecture, TOBB University of Economics and Technology (ETU). Studio Altı | Üstü is a rethinking environment about today's architectural design education with the visual and textual design tools of the past and present; it is a process-oriented alternative studio that looks at architecture through narratives, established to produce speculations about the future, to expose flaws, mistakes, trial and error methods while revealing the invisible qualities. While developing the design process around a story/fiction with narrative, the studio pushes the boundaries of architectural design and establishes creative and triggering relationships between imagination-image and thinking-making. As a way of generating design ideas, narrative acts also constitute a modality of thinking to reproduce them. Narrative is a fragmented structure; each fragment participates in the construction of design thinking through the production and reproduction of events and relationships. The structural, ideational and discursive nature of narrative is fundamental to the production, interpretation and perception of the thought of architectural design. In the context of Studio Altı | Üstü, all the design fragments, narratives, developed in this process constitute a visual and textual representation of architectural thought through different media such as 3D modelling, animation, collage, comics or a series of orthographic architectural drawings within a story/fiction. Studio Altı | Üstü uses narrative drawing as a dialogue between story and line to embody the unreal/unconstructed/fictional through narrative acts and media. Narrative drawing is an architectural story created through a media, an alternative medium of imagining, describing and realizing indistinct places full of hidden possibilities. This thesis presents a theoretical and practical exploration of narrative acts as a learning and teaching approach in the architectural design studio. It aims to speculate on the future of architectural education with today's design tools and to evaluate the potential of narrative. A sustainable lightweight masonry unit: A bioplastic, biodegradable, modular proposal with interlocking qualities
After the study of the materials widely used in the construction industry and the development of sustainability, the examination of existing materials in terms of sustainability revealed the necessity of a sustainable alternative. In this context, it is aimed to present an alternative lightweight masonry unit that aims to make a significant contribution to waste reduction and energy efficiency in the construction field, that is recyclable and completely biodegradable, offering a completely innovative design and a new material. The raw materials of both aerated concrete and tuff-based construction blocks are cement-based and not suitable for recycling. The debris accumulated after the demolition of the structures built with these lightweight masonry blocks is transported to places away from the habited areas and stored there. This situation creates significant environmental health problems in the long run. Since the cement is used as an additive in such wastes and the materials are not suitable for recycling, their dissolution time in the environment is quite long. Similar to demolition processes, the production processes of existing aerated concrete and standard lightweight masonry units do not have an environmentally friendly and/or positive aspect in terms of waste reduction and sustainability. The alternative lightweight masonry unit, in other terms 'construction block', is the subject of this interdisciplinary study, and provides significant contributions to the environment in terms of both production and post-dissolution processes, waste reduction, and sustainability. When aerated concrete and tuff-based construction blocks are examined, it is known that these products produce some harmful substances such as aluminum, silicate, and radon gas. This situation carries significant risks for both human health and the environment. Within the scope of this study, the alternative construction block developed as a solution to these problems is obtained from bioplastic raw materials that are completely biodegradable. Bioplastics are completely environment-friendly and sustainable raw materials that are produced because of the recycling of starch and cellulose-based wastes. Another important feature of the developed construction block is its original design. The developed block is not monolithic like aerated concrete and other construction blocks. It has a completely modular and self-interlocking, clamping system and a design that allows horizontal and vertical installation transitions. The developed construction block provides significant advantages in terms of transportation and storage space, as it is lighter than the existing ones and occupies less space as it consists of six separate modular parts. The modular individual parts can be stacked and therefore create small volumes, thus significantly reducing transportation and storage costs compared to others. Compared to the construction blocks in current use which occupy the same volume logistically, an average of 4 times more area can be built with the developed alternative product, and while a standard construction block of the same dimensions is approximately 8 kg and an aerated concrete is about 5 kg, the proposed bioplastic alternative construction block is about 3 kg. During the product development process, simulations were carried out with dead loads, live loads, and earthquake loads on it, using the NX software, which offers simulation opportunities. In addition, lignocellulosic materials and graphene oxide are used as strength-increasing additives to find the right additives and the best combination to provide sustainability and the strongest and lightest biodegradable prototype. The experiments carried out with the construction offer advantages in many ways compared to the existing alternatives widely used in the construction industry and developed as eco-friendly, proving that it provides the same average strength values as the widely used current blocks.
Buildings that are part of nature; a study of the relationship between architecture and nature through the cases of buildings
Uncontrolled urbanization and the resulting conflict with nature have led to global issues affecting the entire world and ecosystem. Climate crises, depletion of natural resources, and disruption of ecological balance are among the primary problems. While humans play a significant role in the emergence of these problems, architecture has become a crucial profession in preserving ecological balance. Innovative, sustainable attitudes, and approaches towards environmental and climate issues need to be developed through architecture. Just as nature offers unlimited possibilities to humans, buildings and people are also expected to provide unlimited opportunities to nature. It is of great importance that future generations efficiently utilize the opportunities offered by nature while producing built environments. When closely examined, the claim that buildings labeled as green or sustainable are in harmony with nature can be questionable. This thesis aims not only to explore self-sufficient buildings but also to investigate how buildings can be truly designed to be in harmony with nature and possess qualities that are in symbiosis with it. Initially, a conceptual framework encompassing ecological psychology, ecological architecture, and regenerative architecture will be discussed to explore the relationships between buildings and nature. Through these readings, the mutual interaction and exchange that should exist between buildings and nature will be revealed, and research will focus on how buildings should not just adapt to nature but coexist with it. In the continuation of the study, it is important not only to address this conceptual framework but also to examine current practices. Frequently used green building certification systems, awards, and principles will be scrutinized to evaluate whether they serve merely as a 'marketing tool' or if they genuinely provide adequate scope for evaluating buildings as integrated with nature. Based on all these readings and analyses, the developed holistic approach aims to define the qualities that a nature-integrated building should possess. Buildings with green building certification and those labeled as green/ecological/regenerative without certification will be selected. They will be evaluated and interpreted using the created holistic approach: the Nature-Integrated Building Evaluation Approach. Consequently, an inference will be made as to whether the buildings currently designated as sustainable/green/ecological are a part of nature, and their deficiencies will be highlighted, emphasizing the crucial role that nature should play in future architectural endeavors. This study aims to foster the adoption of a more solution-oriented and sustainable approach to global environmental problems, encouraging the design of built environments as structures that are not only integrated with nature but also have a positive impact on the environment. The integration of technological advancements and tools with environmental awareness will ease the process of designing buildings that not only emphasize eco-friendliness but also make a favorable impact on the environment.
Reşad Ekrem Koçu'nun İstanbul Ansiklopedisi'ni okumak
This study aims to analyse the significance of city encyclopaedias within the context of media studies and urban history, by examining the concept of the "encyclopaedic narrative" as it relates to these reference works. Specifically, the analysis will be framed within the context of Reşad Ekrem Koçu's Istanbul Encyclopaedia, which is not only the first city encyclopaedia in Turkey, but also an multi/inter-disciplinary work with a range of potential connections and articles. Cross-referencing is a fundamental principle of encyclopaedic narrative, and it is utilized to link articles together within the framework of the narrative. The system that results from this principle is a complex structure, comprised of nodes and connections that form a database. In essence, the narrative elements that make up the organization of the encyclopaedia function as a type of database, and the structure created by the encyclopaedic narrative at this point is referred to as the "topology of the encyclopaedia." Encyclopaedic topology is a productive structure that is open to new discourses thanks to the nodes and connections it contains. City encyclopaedias are not solely a reference source, but also a potential research tool for urban historiography and media studies. However, city encyclopaedias were treated only as reference sources, rather than being an object of research in themselves. Koçu's Istanbul Encyclopaedia is multi-layered in content and structure, yet a comprehensive examination of its topology from a holistic perspective has not been conducted. The narrative transforms from a subjective field to an objective one while providing a basis for reading experiments using computational methods. Through this reading utilization of digital tools in digital transformation enables the resolution and analysis of the topology of the Istanbul Encyclopaedia, offering new insights and holistic approaches to the discovery of historical traces. The primary objective of this research is to provide a basis for further reading experiments that investigate the transition of Koçu's unique narrative structure to an objective perspective and its impact on urban history writing and media studies through micro/macro, private/public, subjective/objective dualities. To achieve this, the distant reading method, an alternative reading technique, will be employed. A comprehensive analysis of Koçu's Istanbul Encyclopaedia will be conducted through multiple reading attempts, and the potential and limitations of these readings will be discussed. The ultimate goal of the study is to uncover the impact of the city on urban discourses regarding change and transformation and to offer suggestions and analyses on how city encyclopaedias can be read with a holistic approach.
Factors affecting unbranded housing design and production
Need-based structures such as housing constitute a large part of the building density in the urban area. Residential buildings determine the aesthetics and morphology of a city due to their high density. It is possible to observe resemblance among residential buildings in Turkey. The reasons of similitude could be understood by analysing the housing procurement process. In this study, the factors affecting the unbranded housing design and production process are examined in legal, economic, cultural, technological, and sectorial context in order to understand the constraints that create the tendency towards uniformity among unbranded residential buildings.
Photography as a tool for architectural criticism: Iwan Baan's photographs of CCTV and Heydar Aliyev Centre
Since its invention, photography has been a key tool for documenting, educating, and disseminating architectural developments and knowledge of architecture, promoting specific styles, or highlighting the unique characteristics of an architect's work. The representative quality of architectural photography has been a subject of discussion regarding how the photograph portrays architecture. There is an ongoing debate about whether architectural photographs truly represent the buildings they depict. While factual accuracy remains up for discussion, it's clear that each photograph reflects the photographer's interpretation, adding an extra layer of meaning beyond simple depiction. Given that architecture is a multifaceted profession that affects people in various ways, the way it is photographed holds utmost importance for the discourse on architecture, especially considering the limited possibility of actual encounters with the architecture. This thesis argues that architectural photographs can serve as more than mere representations of buildings. They possess the ability to convey subtle critiques and commentary on the built environment. The study analyzes the photographic frame as the principal element in establishing the meaning, through the rhetorical understanding of frame and the historical establishment of subject and observer, which can be employed to produce architectural criticism. Two photographic series of Iwan Baan, CCTV and Heydar Aliyev Center are examined in support of this claim. They have been selected because of Baan's unique interpretation and renowned status of the project's architects.
Humanitarian architecture: As a strategy to overcome scarcities in urban areas
Throughout history, humanity has witnessed various challenges ranging from natural disasters to human-induced crises. The increasing frequency and impact of these disasters are associated with factors such as environmental neglect, diseases, political conflicts, and industrial accidents. These circumstances lead to massive human movements, exposing individuals to various scarcities when they relocate or reside in different places. At this point, the concept of scarcity is not limited solely to material absence or lack of access to resources, contrary to popular belief; it also indicates the absence of all phenomena and services that humans require. Among these scarcities are notable physical privations such as housing problems, informal settlements, lack of green spaces, limited access to public services, the disappearance of productive lands, and employment issues. Alongside these tangible hardships, there exist intangible aspects like spatial perception loss, a sense of lack of belonging, and negative alterations in societal memory. Although the concept of scarcity is primarily recognized as the main focus of studies in disciplines such as economics and finance, the manifestations and duplicable expressions of scarcity clearly demonstrate its existence within the discipline of architecture. The influence of the scarcity concept on cities and thereby on individuals amplifies the grievances experienced in urban areas. While well-intentioned efforts to address the opportunities that cities fail to provide due to these deficiencies are temporary and urgent, they cannot entirely eradicate the presence of scarcity in urban areas. It should be acknowledged that the solution to this phenomenon, fundamentally affecting nature, habitats, cities, and the flow of daily life, lies within humanity itself as an integral part of nature. Separating humans from nature is impossible; hence, the chaotic relationship between humans and scarcity will persist in both problem-solving and resolution stages. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore Humanitarian Architecture, a relatively new approach that embraces elevating humanity and seeing humans as collaborators, to offer healing suggestions for scarcities that directly or indirectly affect humans and their living spaces. Humanitarian Architecture is an approach that not only focuses on humans but also collaborates with them. By involving humans in the working environment, it aims to preserve values and culture while responding to the needs of society and individuals. In this context, the scope of this study is to concentrate on understanding the place and effects of the concept of scarcity within the discipline of architecture and to propose solutions to these issues identified as problems through the collective effort of the Humanitarian Architecture approach. The study aims to highlight how this approach's humane perspective, both in theoretical and practical contexts, can serve as a pioneering model for broader adoption within the discipline of architecture in addressing contemporary urban scarcities. The thesis examines the sensitive approach of Humanitarian Architecture in presenting unifying and restorative contributions in architecture, along with its advocates. A heritage management model proposal for the integrated conservation of cultural heritage: Case of Ordu historical city center
Historical cities are important cultural heritage areas carrying the traces of past civilizations to the present day, shedding light on human history, are indispensable for social memory, and are worth protecting. Since the spread of industrialization after 1950s in Turkey, urbanization pressures due to rapid population increase with ongoing migrations from rural to urban, had been causing corruptive transformations in the historic city centers of the rapidly growing cities. In this sense, urban and architectural conservation processes are critically important for the sustainability of the city's cultural and historical identity. Some important steps have been taken so far in the field of conservation in Turkey, but the concept of heritage management is in progress and management plans have not yet been put into action as common as they should be, to overcome the implementation problems in the historic urban areas. It is thought that these problems arise primarily due to the lack of an integrated heritage management system parallel to a legal framework covering conservation plan, urban and architectural conservation and coordinating all stakeholders in this regard. This can be achieved not only by conservation management plans, but also by setting high-level policies and coordination of implementation processes. Ordu Historic Urban Site, which is an important area reflecting the historic urban identity of the city, is selected as the study area of the thesis. In the first chapter, the subject, the problem definitions, the objectives, and the methods of the study are explained. In the second chapter, history and theory of conservation, conservation planning and related legislation in Turkey are examined. In the third chapter, the heritage management and management plan concepts are examined, including related international guides set by global conservation institutions and the legal framework on heritage management in Turkey. Besides, selected successful historical cities from around the World and from Turkey and their heritage management systems are examined. In the fourth chapter, Ordu Historic Urban Site is analyzed phsically, socioeconomically, administravely and organizationally, legally, and financially in terms of conservation and management. In this section, general information about Ordu historic city center and the historic urban site defined as the study area are searched in terms of the historical development of the city. The previous planning activities and conservation studies, as well as the current physical characteristics are examined depending on the detailed site analysis. Then, socioeconomical features of the study area is analyzed and put forward, based on the social survey study. Administrative and organizational aspects together with financial resources and tools are examined depending on the information provided with the semi-structured interviews with the two local authorities responsible in the area. In the fifth chapter, depending on the analysis, the evaluation of Ordu Historic Urban Site to develop a heritage management plan and model is done through a SWOT study, defining values, problems, opportunities, and threats. In the sixth chapter, a heritage management model and plan are proposed for Ordu Historic Urban Site is developed defining the themes, goals and actions for an integrated and sustainable conservation, followed by additional suggestions for a user-oriented management model proposal and a database model proposal. The management model proposal aims to create a framework, guiding a more succesful conservation process preventing the losses in the historic urban sites within the growing medium-sized Anatolian cities, especially in the same Black Sea region. In the seventh and last chapter, major findings are put forward and proposals are discussed briefly as the conclusion.
A morphological analysis on Bursa historical city center; the physical transformation of Khans District between 1862 and 2018
Urban morphology, in its most general sense, is the study of the city as a living space. Urban morphology studies aim to analyze the relations produced in the development process of social structure through urban space and urban patterns by examining the change in space. The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the Khans District, one of the main areas of the historical city center of Bursa, based on morphological approaches. The city of Bursa, as the cradle of important civilizations throughout history, has always maintained its importance with its history, culture, social and economic structure. This diversity has shaped and changed the city in socio-cultural, economic, and architectural terms. The city, which was shaped by its unique urban settlement features in the Ottoman period, changed its physical and architectural features in the 20th century due to industrialization, migration, and globalization. Especially after the 1960s, it is observed that the original qualities were subject to rapid change and beyond that to an increasing deterioration. It is important and necessary to be able to stop the ongoing loss of quality in the historical urban fabric, to transfer it to the future as original as possible, to guide the future interventions in the Khans District with restitutive approaches based on reliable sources or to interpret them by taking reference or inspiration from them. In line with these purposes, examining and defining the urban characteristics of Khans District in different periods, which constitutes an important part of the historical city center of Bursa, one of the leading historical and trade centers of Turkey, examining the change of urban characteristics between periods, revealing the morphological interaction of urban and architectural qualities. It is thought that the analysis based on this method is important in terms of guiding future planning and urban design in the study area, as well as the conservation and restoration works. The research period is determined between the years of 1862-dated Suphi Bey Map, the oldest map of Bursa, and 2018, the most current map year, to determine the physical change and the factors behind the morphological transformation of the historical city center of Bursa Khans District. In the light of cartographic materials, old photographs, and written documents, urban morphological analyses, shown on redrawn maps are used to compare different periods of the Khans District morphologically. In the analyses and data processing process the redrawn maps (with their removed deformations due to their old techniques) of 1862, 1909, late 1920s, 1957, 1989, and 2018 superposed successively. During the visual and formal analysis of the thesis study in line with the determined target, it is aimed to simplify the urban fabric and architectural features and to show the diversity and richness in various stages. In addition, it is aimed to reveal and compare the evolution at every phase of the 'urban fabric', 'urban circulation network', and 'land use (functional distribution)' for the Khans District, to reveal physical continuities and changes. As a result of the morphological analyses, it is observed that the organic urban fabric became more linear with the new transportation networks opened. In addition, it can be said that public and administrative buildings constructed with new materials and construction techniques due to the political regimes, the influence of modernism and planning have transformed the area into a region where administrative, public, and social functions, as well as commercial functions, coexist. According to the literature review, it was observed that there was no study conducted with the morphological method using cartographic materials regarding Khans District of Bursa. In this context, it is thought that this thesis study based on the morphological method will be an original resource in terms of guiding future planning and urban design studies, as well as conservation and restoration studies. Investigation of collaboration and communication parameters of a transdisciplinary BIM ecosystem
In building production, architects, civil engineers, electrical engineers, and mechanical engineers work together to produce a common denominator product. While the activities in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry can be discussed within themselves, "building" is located at the intersection of these disciplines. Discipline-specific models and methods are insufficient to explain and manage this intersection area. The Building Information Modeling (BIM) ecosystem provides a collaborative environment that includes all disciplines, from idea to demolition of the building. BIM is defined as a human activity that is approached as an integrative system with gathering elements such as n-dimensional modeling, parametric modeling, object-oriented modeling, and interoperability. The emergence of the potential of BIM is provided with the effective deployment of these elements. The digital platform of BIM is limited to implementing semantic and geometric information. BIM, currently known as a digital representation or coordination, has also grown in this perspective. However, the BIM ecosystem is an ecosystem that expands from the real world to the digital world. In this sense, the thesis is based on exploring collaborative potential of the BIM ecosystem, and the aim of the thesis is to investigate the BIM ecosystem's real-world conditions utilizing transdisciplinary collaboration. This thesis investigates communication and collaboration parameters among participants for exploring new perspectives within the Fogcatcher case study, which is a transdisciplinary design and building project. In the scope of the thesis, six experts specializing in various disciplines related to water harvesting, such as meteorology, biomimicry, architecture, material science, and molecular dynamics, are invited for focus group meetings in the case study. The focus group meetings are held to reframe the problem in a transdisciplinary environment. The meetings are recorded as visual and audio with participants' permission and the Human Research Evaluation Board's approval. The video recordings are deciphered for data collection. Differences among experts and meetings are specified and these differences are analyzed. The transcriptions are analyzed based on differences between experts and meetings in the communication analysis. In conclusion, this collaborative ecosystem emerges in terms of a common problem, idea, or well-known example. These associations are based on background information and experiences of humans. Neglecting these associations decreased the capacity of creating solutions in the "building." Finding a way to approach human aspects with the digital environment is essential to create an innovative and integrative environment in the BIM ecosystem.
Unveiling the potential of the earthen structures in the context of Turkey
Natural building materials and construction techniques are recognized for their capacity to enhance the sustainability of the built environment, as their carbon footprint, both at the production and use phase, are lower compared to the commonly used construction materials in the industry. Among these materials, earth material has regained significant attention over the last decade. Yet their use is scarce, especially in urban zones not only in Turkey but also across the world. Regardless of the difficulty of standardization in the production and manufacturing stages of these techniques and materials sustainability issues have brought them back to our agenda. Recently, research on topics such as integrating innovative production techniques like 3D printing has increased, yielding promising results for addressing quality control, labor-intensive processes, and characteristic weaknesses. The thesis aims to reassess the role of earthen structures and materials in Turkey, considering current technologies and opportunities. This will be achieved by integrating global literature with Turkey-specific processes. The objective is to identify the barriers hindering the widespread use of earth materials and structures, as well as the factors that can promote their adoption. This thesis first provides a snapshot of this niche sector, with a particular emphasis on a small number of instances gathered through an online survey distributed to professionals in the field, utilizing a geographical mapping approach to identify contemporary earthen structures. Second, through the analysis of traditional and modern earthen techniques and the qualitative analysis of data obtained from semi-structured interviews with field practitioners, the thesis examines the drivers and barriers to the use of these techniques in Turkey. Due to the multi-layered nature of the topic and the context involving innovations, an innovation-focused analytical framework, the Multi-Level Perspective, is used to read and analyze the research findings. The relationships between "The Landscape," "Regime," "Niche," and the socio-technical context as described by this theoretical approach are examined and finally cross analyzed with the existing documentation across the world. By drawing on the reasons that hinder the use of these techniques, a prospective framework on how these techniques would possibly find their place in the upcoming future is provided. The analysis revealed that Turkey being an earthquake zone and the current earthquake regulations are one of the main obstacles to the adoption of this material and techniques, and this situation places Turkey in a completely different position from other countries examined in the literature. In addition, the impact on the current building codes, the lack of standards for testing earth mixtures, the lack of special funds as incentives for earth material practitioners and the lack of courses on these materials in formal learning environments including architecture and civil engineering departments are also highlighted. The thesis only focused on the perspective of niche practitioners; therefore, further research is needed based on the analysis of may benefit from an in-depth study of end-users and policymakers.
From projective methods to real-time digital construction of architectural space in first-year architectural education
Architecture inherently possesses a four-dimensional dynamic structure. However, architecture has been discussed using two-dimensional representation and design tools for centuries. This thesis explores whether the four-dimensional nature of architecture can be revealed through embodied cognition in terms of spatial representation, comprehension, and understanding. It questions whether the four-dimensional dynamic structure of architecture can be better explored and experienced through the tools used to produce it and the body's involvement. In this thesis, the historical origins of architectural drawing have been investigated, tracing its evolution from primitive cave drawings to complex orthographic projections and addressing ongoing debates surrounding traditional methods. A critical point is why the methodologies that became systematic in the 18th century have remained prevalent in contemporary architectural education and practice. The theory of embodied cognition posits that cognitive processes are deeply rooted in the body's interactions with the physical world and that the mind-body connection fundamentally shapes thoughts and cognition. In this context, the research discusses the potential implications of spatial learning through the lens of embodied cognition. In the scope of this thesis, first-year architecture students at TOBB University of Economics and Technology were observed interacting with artificial intelligence and virtual reality tools such as Skybox AI, Open Brush, and Arkio in their Basic Design courses, and the impact of these digital tools on the students' spatial understanding and design processes was evaluated. Based on this research, the limitations and future of traditional orthographic projection in understanding and exploring spatial representation were discussed, especially when compared to new methods like collaborative spatial production in VR. In summary, this thesis questions the possibilities of a comprehensive architectural education that integrates traditional drawing methods as the conventional means of architectural representation and production with innovative pedagogical strategies supported by cutting-edge technology and embodied cognition.
Integrating solar-related passive strategies in the initial design process: A cumulative workflow proposal
In contemporary times, the effects of the global energy and climate crisis have increasingly underscored the importance of energy efficiency in architectural practices. Achieving energy efficiency in existing structures presents significant challenges, as the interventions that can be made are limited due to the building's pre-existing state. Consequently, making decisions regarding energy efficiency during the early design stages is more advantageous. However, this early design phase is inherently complex due to the abundance of alternatives, the variety of potential scenarios, and the limited data available. At this stage, increasing the climatic data available to architects contributes to the development of design proposals that align with these parameters, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the design process. This thesis, therefore, aims to integrate climatic data into the early design process. Solar-related energy-efficient design emerges as a significant consideration within the context of energy efficiency. Understanding the effects of the sun during the early stages of design greatly influences various design decisions, such as massing, plan layout, building envelope, and material selection. However, the implementation of these energy-efficient design methods also brings certain challenges. Therefore, it is vi crucial to establish a specific sequence and classification to use analysis methods and design strategies in energy-efficient design. This study seeks to integrate energy-efficient strategies into the early design process in a consistent order that does not negatively affect the effectiveness of previous strategies. In this context, a cumulative process plan and workflow are proposed, beginning with massing studies and progressing towards more detailed design decisions. This workflow functions as a warning-suggestion algorithm, which divides the architectural design process into stages and aims to contribute to the design through strategy suggestions presented at the beginning of each stage. To observe the integration and advantages of this workflow, a case study was conducted in the city of İzmir, which poses challenging conditions in terms of solar exposure. The results of the case study indicate that this workflow has the potential to provide recommendations without slowing down the architectural project processes. The workflow evaluated the integration of 17 different strategies into the design, revealing that some strategies are compatible with each other, while others serve as alternatives. Applicability to projects at different stages is demonstrated by the fact that the workflow can continue even if certain recommendations are not used. In energy-efficient design, a cumulative approach made possible through a consistent sequence and elimination method is achievable with the workflow proposed in this study.
From black box to transparency: Advances in ai-drivenco-creation in architectural design
This thesis examines the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into architectural design processes and explores the impact of these technologies on creative practices, while also addressing the limitations that arise from the "black box" nature of AI tools. AI technologies, particularly those using machine learning and deep learning algorithms, are increasingly being utilized in architecture, providing new tools for design generation, analysis, and optimization. However, the opaque nature of these technologies can make it challenging for users to understand and control these tools, creating barriers to their effective use as collaborative partners in the design process. As an alternative to this, a "gray box" approach is suggested. The research explores various AI-supported methods for both 2D and 3D production, including tools such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, ZoeDepth, GhPython, Blender, ChatGPT, Tripo AI, and Comfy UI. Experimental studies using these tools highlight their strengths, such as visualization and modeling capabilities, while also revealing weaknesses like lack of transparency and limited user interaction. The study provides an assessment of the current state of co-creation between AI and human designers in practice. It emphasizes the need for more interactive and explainable AI systems (XAI) to give architects a better understanding and influence over the outputs of AI tools, thus enabling a more effective co-creation process. x This work advocates for the development of AI tools specifically designed for architectural purposes and suggests that integrating methodologies like XAI could enhance transparency and user engagement, making AI more creatively useful within design workflows. XAI could increase trust by making AI systems' decision-making processes more understandable to architects and could enable AI to serve as a more effective co-creator in design processes. Additionally, the thesis explores the potential for AI to evolve from a passive tool to an active co-creator, where AI not only generates design options but also interacts dynamically with human designers in a feedback-driven process.
Perspectives of space on violence: Establishing the relationship between space and violence through Ankara Bentderesi
Violence is an expansive and intricate concept analyzed across various disciplines. Although it is frequently perceived as an interpersonal phenomenon, violence is profoundly interconnected with spatial dynamics. The space associated with violence is not merely a physical environment; it serves as a locus where social relationships, power dynamics, and economic processes are materialized. Consequently, violence is exemplified not only through physical assaults or destruction but also through processes such as displacement, discrimination, poverty, and social exclusion, all of which occur from the disruption of social and economic structures. The main aim of this thesis is to examine how violence emerges through socio-spatial decisions, economic changes, and individual behaviors within space, to evaluate the physical, psychological, economic, structural, and symbolic impacts of these processes, and to determine which actions can be defined as violence. In line with this aim, the thesis targets to evaluate spatial violence using an interdisciplinary and multi-dimensional approach, and to uncover how different political regimes and urban/spatial planning strategies have perpetuated violence in various forms throughout history. xi For these purposes, Bentderesi and its surroundings, located in the Altındağ district of Ankara, have been chosen as a specific case study. Bentderesi has experienced significant social and spatial transformations over time, has harbored some of the most dangerous neighborhoods where even law enforcement hesitated to enter, and has been stigmatized by associations with brothels and prostitution, all while its historical, natural, and cultural heritage has been systematically eroded. It is a marginalized urban area where violence shapes the spatial environment, spatial transformation shapes violence, and this cyclical dynamic becomes evident. Thus, reinterpreting and redefining the concept of violence through a spatial lens requires a thorough re-reading of Bentderesi. The methodology employed in this thesis is grounded in David Riches' theory of violence, which explores violence from the perspectives of the performer, victim, and witness. This theoretical framework encourages a comprehensive understanding of spatial violence and its expressions within the built environment. The analysis conducted through this tripartite perspective reveals that space can function as a perpetrator, provoking violence, as a victim, suffering harm from political and individual actions, and as a witness, retaining the imprints of violence. This classification makes visible the underlying processes that contribute to urban spaces' destructive, fear-inducing, criminal, and harmful outcomes. Building anatomy: Impact of internal and external factors on building design; Production and analysis
Building production has historically followed similar practices, starting with receiving work, moving to projecting and concluding with the building's physical realization. While the steps remain consistent, the factors influencing building design have evolved due to changing construction techniques, advancements in technology, societal needs, socio-cultural dynamics, global epidemics, and natural disasters like earthquakes. Similarly, architects and designers have continually redefined the meaning of a building's existence, framing the process in terms of construction stages, design components, or acquisition phases. Despite these variations, the goal has consistently been the effort to create a building. This thesis identifies nine stages in the building creation process, starting with the emergence of a need and ending with user feedback. These stages are deeply connected to the body, which has been a fundamental reference in architectural production since its inception. Like the human body, each building possesses unique proportions and characteristics, making it a singular creation. This idea contrasts sharply with the "Type Project" concept, which advocates uniformity in design and production. A building's individuality emerges through its existence stages and the factors influencing it. The research explores how buildings are shaped by these dynamics, emphasizing their uniqueness as outcomes of their processes. The relationship between the body and buildings was initially examined, revealing historical parallels. Through this investigation, nine essential stages of building creation were identified: Emergence of Need, Receiving the Work, Contract, Design Studies, Implementation Project, Obtaining Project Permit, Structural Production, Obtaining Occupancy, and Usage/Acquisitions. The factors influencing these stages were subsequently analyzed. Central to this study are the concepts of "interoception" and "exteroception'' derived from the body and described as "internal and external balance." External factors include context, economy, culture, and materials, while internal factors involve the architect's identity, user needs, planning processes, and the roles of those involved in production. While each building possesses unique dynamics, the interplay of these factors remains universal, shaping the building's development. To visualize this interplay, the "building existence" stages were mapped out. To evaluate this framework, 80 architects were surveyed. Each selected a building they had contributed to and identified the factors influencing its production within the defined stages. This aimed to uncover how architects perceive these processes and identify additional factors. Through this analysis, the internal and external elements shaping buildings were examined, offering insights into optimizing building production processes. The study, titled "Building Anatomy," provides a roadmap for architects and stakeholders in construction. It also serves as a learning tool for students, offering a structured understanding of the processes and factors shaping architectural creation. By clarifying the dynamics influencing building production, this framework fosters a deeper understanding of the anatomy of buildings and the balance between internal and external factors.
Ankara apartmanları: Sosyal medyada mimari temsil ve yeniden üretim
This study investigates the concept of Ankara Apartmanları, a significant element of Turkey's mid-20th-century modernist architecture, focusing on its historical, cultural, and social dimensions alongside its digital representations. By integrating architectural analysis with a critical examination of social media content, the study seeks to define and expand the understanding of Ankara Apartmanları as a physical and conceptual entity. The research adopts a comprehensive methodological framework, integrating historical context analysis with an in-depth examination of social media content to explore the representation and evolution of Ankara Apartmanları in both physical and digital realms. Historical analysis provides insights into the development of Ankara's apartment buildings during Turkey's modernization process. In contrast, social media analysis examines how these buildings are represented and reinterpreted on platforms, particularly Instagram. The findings reveal that Ankara Apartmanları serve not only as physical markers of Turkey's urban transformation but also as subjects of digital discourse, where their architectural details are highlighted, shared, and often recontextualized. The study further categorizes Instagram accounts into thematic groups to understand the dynamics of user interactions and their role in shaping architectural narratives. It identifies patterns in the representation of Ankara Apartmanları, including the emphasis on specific aesthetic elements and historical contexts, which contribute to their contemporary cultural significance. These analyses underscore the role of social media in democratizing architectural representation and fostering new forms of engagement with Ankara's architectural heritage. This research offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the intersection of physical and digital representations of Ankara Apartmanları. By addressing the interplay between historical architecture and digital media, the study contributes to ongoing discussions on the preservation and reinterpretation of urban cultural memory in the digital age. The findings provide a critical perspective on how digital platforms influence public perception and participation in architectural discourse. Türkiye'de endüstri mirasının uyarlanabilir yeniden kullanımında sivil inisiyatiflerin rolü: Feshane, Yedikule ve Hasanpaşa Gazhanesi örnekleri
Cultural heritage assets, including industrial sites, play a crucial role in shaping societal identities by establishing tangible and intangible connections to the past. Industrial heritage emerged as a new field of study in the mid-20th century, coinciding with the global decline of traditional industries. This shift left numerous factories, mines, railways, and other industrial structures abandoned, prompting scholars, architects, and conservationists to recognize their historical, cultural, and technical significance. Preserving and repurposing these sites for contemporary use requires comprehensive conservation practices and strategic planning to create sustainable narratives for their future. In Türkiye, industrial heritage conservation remains insufficiently developed, as it faces challenges such as limited public awareness, financial constraints, legislative gaps, and the physical degradation of structures. This thesis examines the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage through community-based and artist-driven heritage approaches, providing a comprehensive perspective on the transformation processes and the contributions of interdisciplinary artistic practices. The thesis focuses on three case studies in Türkiye: Feshane and Yedikule Gasworks (through Seretonin events of 1989 and 1992) and Hasanpaşa Gasworks (adaptive reuse process initiated in 1994). The methodology combines site observations, interviews with diverse stakeholders—including artists, members of cultural collectives, professionals, and academics—and archival analysis, assessed using designated evaluation criteria. The findings demonstrate that actions of adaptive reuse, which needs good strategies to realize qualified conservation examples, enhance public awareness, foster urban revitalization, and preserve industrial sites' historical, social, and technical values. Furthermore, the study highlights the pivotal role of civil initiatives in shaping equitable urban transformations and influencing decision-making processes. This thesis contributes to the discourse on industrial heritage conservation by offering practical frameworks that balance heritage conservation with contemporary urban needs, emphasizing the transformative potential of participatory and creative approaches in sustainable urban development. Mitigating the urban heat island effect in historic areas: A case study of Ulus Square and its surroundings in Ankara
As rising temperatures pose an escalating threat to heritage sites, this thesis examines the Urban Heat Island (UHI) mitigation strategies applicable in cultural heritage areas located in urban areas. Although international research on the assessment of UHI impacts within culturally protected areas, particularly in contexts constrained by conservation regulations and physical intervention limitations, scholarly work in Turkey remains limited. This highlights the urgent need to identify and incorporate key environmental factors into heritage conservation planning processes. Developing robust methodologies to evaluate UHI effects within these sensitive contexts is essential for advancing climate-responsive and resilient conservation practices. In this sense, the study first documents existing research on the impact of UHI on urban heritage zones to analyze the methods used to assess the UHI effect and then proposes mitigation studies. In line with the research objectives, this study addresses the following questions: What is the impact of the UHI effect on the urban microclimate of Ulus Square and its surroundings, and how does the UHI effect influence human thermal comfort in these areas? Which mitigation strategies proposed in the literature can be applied to reduce the UHI effect on historic Ulus Square and its surroundings, and which of these strategies demonstrate the highest mitigation potential in this context? Furthermore, how do these strategies compare to those recommended for the broader urban area of Ankara? Finally, which environmental and morphological factors should be documented, and how can they be represented in the conservation analysis of these zones? To address these research questions, the thesis adopts a case study approach. Ulus Square in Ankara, designated as a cultural heritage site, was selected as the study area. To evaluate the UHI effect, rural meteorological data were simulated under urban-specific parameters using urban climate modeling tools. These include the Urban Weather Generator (UWG), EnergyPlus Weather files (EPW), and Grasshopper/Dragonfly plugins. The simulations focused on assessing key thermal comfort indicators such as Dry Bulb Temperature (°C), Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT), and the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Mitigation strategies identified in the literature were evaluated within the framework of national and international conservation principles, such as the Washington Charter (1987), the Valletta Principles (2011), and the Regulation on Conservation Master Plans (2005). Accordingly, four distinct intervention scenarios were developed. Due to strict regulatory frameworks and physical constraints, the proposed scenarios were limited to low-intensity measures such as increasing surface albedo, reducing anthropogenic heat from traffic, and expanding green areas. The findings indicate that small-scale interventions can yield measurable improvements in mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing outdoor thermal comfort. The study highlights the importance of considering user comfort and spatial context alongside material and energy performance in conservation analyses. This multifaceted approach is particularly crucial in historically sensitive environments when evaluating design decisions. The proposed strategies can contribute to the revision of conservation plans, site management approaches, and relevant regulatory frameworks by integrating climate-adaptive principles. In this context, the study aims to support the long-term resilience and sustainability of cultural heritage sites in the face of the growing impacts of climate change. Architectural representation and spatial practices: Adiscourse-oriented reading of competition projects
Architectural representation has been used as a communication tool in architecture for centuries, employing various forms and techniques. Each production establishes a language through its representation. From Antiquity to the present, architectural representation has been employed in various ways, and today it has evolved beyond simply presenting what has been constructed. Today, it has become an integral part of the design process and the transformation of ideas (Maver, 2002). As Uğur Tanyeli emphasized in his seminar "The Meaninglessness of Meaning," the power of representation has grown in modern architecture, where "the built word" has been replaced by "the printed word" (Tanyeli, 2016). With this transformation, architectural representation has evolved beyond being a mere communication tool, becoming a mechanism that generates a growing disconnection between what is represented and what is built in modern architecture. The idealized spaces conveyed through representation often fail to align with the actual spatial and social conditions of everyday life, making this discrepancy a critical area of inquiry. This study explores the extent to which architectural representation, discourse, and built reality overlap or diverge, and aims to analyze the underlying causes of this gap. Grounded in Michel Foucault's theory of discourse, the study treats discourse not only as a linguistic construct but also as a structure that produces spatial norms and power relations. In this context, the investigation focuses as much on what is made visible through representation as on what is consistently rendered invisible. The research analyzes ten architectural competition projects held and realized in Turkey over the past decade. Each project is examined through a multilayered methodology involving representational visuals, jury evaluation reports, user feedback, and data on the implementation process. The study compares the differences between the graphic language of representation and the spatial reality of the constructed buildings, drawing on the discourses of designers, users, and jury members. Python-based discourse analysis is used to objectively identify the dominant concepts emphasized by each actor group, and these concepts are further examined through targeted survey questions. Rather than offering a critique of architectural practice alone, this research seeks to establish a constructive framework that connects theoretical discussions on representation with the realities of design and implementation. By positioning architectural representation as not merely a reflection of design, but as a discursive force that shapes the social production of space, the study aims to expand the conceptual framework of the field. Through its integrative approach that bridges theory and practice, the research contributes to an alternative architectural thinking that fosters more equitable, inclusive, and context-sensitive modes of representation.
An architectural perspective on rural–urban dialectic
This thesis approaches the rural–urban interface as a dialectical stage where urban expansion, commodification, and ecological ruptures become visible. Within this stage, space is defined as a field where global processes intersect with local practices and political and ecological dynamics are interwoven. Accordingly, the rural and the urban are regarded as relational grounds, continuously reproduced through shifting relations, and this relation is conceptualized as the rural–urban dialectic. Following a critical reading of urbanization practices, this thesis positions Ankara as the context for discussing the rural–urban interface through its current dynamics and possible future scenarios. The Architectural Diploma Studio at TOBB ETU, which addressed the rural–urban relation as a design problem in Ankara and its peripheries, is situated at the center of the research. The studio is considered both as a critical site of inquiry and as a design practice aimed at rethinking space. Students' design proposals are analyzed through the Critical Dialectic Matrices developed from the thesis's critical readings. This framework traces how contextual analyses were transformed into scenarios and programmatic proposals across five key dimensions: environmental, socio-cultural, economic, political, and technological. In this way, the intersections of different dimensions and scales within the rural–urban interface are revealed, exposing both the potentials and the limitations of design in addressing complex relations. It also shows the extent to which critiques generated through contextual readings were reflected in life scenarios and architectural programs, indicating the dimensions excluded and emphasized. Notably, the strong emphasis on the environmental dimension points to a clear disciplinary tendency that reflects the boundaries of architecture. The critical perspective proposed by this study challenges the technocratic neutrality often ascribed to planning and design, framing these fields instead as political and epistemological arenas where knowledge, power, and spatial justice are continuously negotiated. By foregrounding ecological relations, local production, and multi-actor participation, the study advocates for the reconsideration of spatial disciplines as relational, plural, and participatory practices informed by dialectical thinking.

Geleneksel Amasra evleri plan tipolojisi
Evlerin neredeyse her yerinde ahşap malzeme kullanılmıştır.
