Abstract (EN)

This study compares the effectiveness of the brochure-based and video-based home training programs for those who had total knee arthroplasty due to osteoarthritisThose who anticipated to the study were randomized into two groups as brochure-based home training program group, (n=20), and video-based home training program group (n=20). Both groups were applied orthopaedic rehabilitation by a researcher physiotherapist during hospital stay after the surgery. Patients of the brochure-based home training group were handed a brochure while, a link of the video was delivered to the video-based home training group when they left the hospital. Patients were evaluated on the day of discharge, second and sixth week after the surgery. The pain assessed with the Visual analogue scale (VAS) while joint range of motion evaluated by universal goniometer and for functional performance 6 minutes walk test, stair climb test and Timed up & go test were applied. Function level of the knee was surveyed with Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) while the functional evaluation of the knee's effects on the daily life's quality level were assessed with the Short Form 36 life quality scale (SF-36). During second and sixth week post surgery in-group evaluation, flexion range of motion, Visual Analog Scale, 6 minutes walk test, time up & go test, stair climb test and WOMAC sub-parameters pain and phsical function's change were meaningfully increased (p<0,005), while comparison betwen the groups showed that there is a significant difference in favour of video-based home training in flexion range of motion, 6 minutes walk test, time up & go test, stair climb test and WOMAC sub parameters stiffnes and phsical function (p<0,005). In conclusion, patients who were offered video-based home training programs after the total knee arthroplasty, gained better life quality and functionality when compared to brochure-based home training programs.
